FAQ
Here you will find answers to our most frequently asked questions.
What is the difference between standard-sized and custom-made shade sails?
Standard-sized shade sails are pre-made in common square, rectangle and triangle sizes — they cost less and ship faster. Custom-made sails are cut to your exact fixing points, in any shape from three to eight corners.
If your fixing points are within about six inches of a standard size, a ready-made sail will fit beautifully. See the standard sizes or design a custom one.
What warranty do you offer, and what does it cover?
Our workmanship warranty runs for the same period as the fabric you choose: 15 years on Monotec 370 and Commercial 95, 10 years on ExtraBlock 330 and Shadetec 320. We manufacture every sail ourselves, so the warranty is ours to honour.
Custom sails are also covered by our Fit Guarantee — if it doesn't fit the space you measured, we'll make you another one free and you keep the first. Full warranty terms.
How do I measure my area for a shade sail?
Measure point to point between your fixing points — not the area you want shaded. For anything with four or more corners you'll also need the diagonals, which is the part most people forget.
The easiest way is to use our configurator: it draws your shape as you type and tells you which measurement it needs next. There's also a printable measuring guide you can take outside with you.
What if I measure wrong?
We check every set of measurements before we cut, and we'll contact you if something looks off.
If a sail still doesn't fit the space you measured, our Fit Guarantee covers it — we make you a new one free and you keep the original. How the Fit Guarantee works.
How long will my sail take to arrive?
Up to 5 business days to manufacture, then 3–7 business days express freight to your door. Standard sizes ship faster as they're made ahead.
Duties, taxes and tariffs are all included in the price — there is nothing to pay on delivery. More on shipping.
How windy can it get?
Our sails are rated to 85 mph when correctly installed and tensioned on adequate fixing points.
Re-tension annually — fabric naturally relaxes over time, and a slack sail is far more vulnerable in wind than a taut one. About our fabrics.
What factors should I consider when choosing a custom-made shade sail?
Consider the size, shape, fabric type, and color that best suits your outdoor space. The placement and height variations of attachment points are also crucial for optimal shade and water runoff.
Fabrics differ in weight, UV block and warranty — compare all four side by side. For edge construction, see cable versus webbing edges.
Where do you ship, and do you offer international shipping?
We ship worldwide from our workshop in New Zealand, including express delivery to the United States. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay — freight, duties, taxes and tariffs are all included, so there is nothing to pay on delivery. More on shipping.
Can I install a shade sail myself, or do I need professional installation?
Most customers install their own using our step-by-step guides — it's usually an afternoon's work with two people. For high, complex or commercial installations we'd recommend a professional.
We manufacture and supply only; we do not measure or install. See the installation guide and how to prepare mounting points.
What is the process for ordering a custom shade sail?
Use our online configurator to choose fabric, colour, edge type and corner count, then enter your measurements. You'll see the price before you commit to anything, and you can email yourself the design to finish later — the price is held for 30 days.
Our team checks your measurements before manufacturing and will contact you if anything looks off.
Are there any restrictions or permits required for installing a shade sail?
Permit requirements depend on local regulations and sail size or location. We advise checking with your local authorities before ordering, particularly for larger sails or anything attached to a structure.
What is the return policy if I'm not satisfied?
Standard-sized sails can be returned in original condition within 30 days of receipt.
Custom sails are made to your measurements and cannot be resold, so they are non-refundable — but they are covered by our Fit Guarantee: if it doesn't fit the space you measured, we make you a new one free and you keep the original. Fit Guarantee terms · Refund policy.
